Eva Kendrick - Composer

Eva Kendrick is a versatile, award-winning composer and vocalist. She writes in many genres including opera, chamber music, song cycles, electroacoustic music, and film music. She is the Chair of the Music Theory & Composition Department and on the Voice Faculty at the Community Music Center of Boston, Adjunct Faculty in Voice at Dean College, is the Music Director at First Parish Medfield, maintains a private voice studio, and is in demand as a freelance composer.

JOINING DEAN COLLEGE FACULTY—(01/12) I am thrilled to announce that I have been asked to join the faculty at Dean College. It is a great joy, and I am honored to be teaching with such a wonderful Performing Arts faculty on the beautiful and historic Dean campus.

COLLEGE CLASS INSTRUCTION — (01/12) In the Spring 2012 semester, I will be teaching a Voice Class at the Community College of Rhode Island Flanagan campus. I will be joined by accompanist Jacob T. Stott.

SHEET MUSIC STORE LAUNCHED!
— (11/11) I have finally launched my online sheet music store! There are currently 15 pieces, with more coming soon! They include chamber music, music for children and choral music, including the "Hymns for People" choral series. ASCAP AWARD RECIPIENT — (09/11) Eva received her eleventh annual ASCAPLU$ Award in the Concert Division for classical music.

INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCE OF WOMEN IN MUSIC HONOREE (06/11) - Eva has been awarded an Honorable Mention for her composition "Sonata for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Viola" in the IAWM New Music Search 2011, in the Judith Lang Zaimont Prize category. Last year she received an Honorable Mention in the same category for her piece "Against the Grain" for wind ensemble and string trio. Kendrick is thrilled to receive an honorable mention in this esteemed competition, in which composers submit works anonymously to be judged by a panel of composers. 

NOTABLE UU COMPOSER (05/11) - Eva is honored to have been listed by the Harvard Square Library as one of the eminent Unitarian-Universalist composers. The list includes such prestigious composers as Daniel Pinkham, Jason Shelton, Jim Scott and Amy Beach. This year, Kendrick composed a series of hymns titled "Hymns for People" for her First Parish Choir based on Unitarian-Universalist themes of love, open-mindedness and community. The five original hymns were premiered throughout the year by the First Parish Intergenerational Choir. Stay tuned for information on upcoming performances of "Hymns for People."

"A CHILD SAID, WHAT IS THE GRASS?" REPRISE - The Community Music Center of Boston reprised Kendrick's piece "A Child Said, What Is the Grass" for chamber orchestra, mixed adult and children's choruses and soprano solo, under the direction of Mark Miller. The annual spring concert, titled Composing Our Future, celebrated CMCB's 101st anniversary on June 12, 2011.

ANNE'S CORDIAL ON THE RHODE SHOW (05/11) - Eva Kendrick and Reed McLaren from Anne's Cordial appeared with Jess Powers of Route 44 on the Rhode Show on Fox Providence to promote the Chanteuse concert on June 4 at Firehouse 13 in Providence, RI. The concert is the third in the series, which features local female performers. You can watch the full video here.

RECORDINGS (05/11) - Songs from Kendrick's Songwriting Demo Album are up on the Music & Video page. The album, featuring her own original rock, pop, folk, classical, jazz, cabaret and country songs, was produced and engineered by Joseph L. Auger of QORQ Productions and features the vocal talents of Los Angeles' Grammy-considered jazz singer MOQUI, Pamela Murray (Superchief Trio), 14-year old Bethany Owens (WGBH's TV show Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman), Joseph L. Auger, and Kendrick's band Anne's Cordial.

CONFERENCES (04/11) - The International Alliance of Women in Music has selected Kendrick's choral piece "To D.R. in Holloway" as one of the peices to be performed at the 30th annual IAWM Congress of 2011, which will be held at Northern University in Flagstaff, Arizona. The performers will be members of the Northern Arizona University Chorale. Kendrick is thrilled to be a part of the congress!


STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS - Kendrick's students did well in both the Boston and Rhode Island Chapters of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Musical Theatre Festival this year. John K. McElroy II won 2nd place in Division 2 (RI), Jessica Price was a semi-finalist (MA) and finalist (RI), and Caroline Orsi and Julia Adrien received Honorable Mentions (MA)! Kendrick's students were award-winners of the Boston Lyric Opera Linda Cabot Black Aria Competition for teens as well. Molly Quinlan, was awarded a Vocal Scholarship by the Millis High School Back Stage Crew. Kaitlin Doherty was chosen to be in the Senior Districts and Kelly McManus and Elena Ruiz were selected for the Junior Districts. A group of Kendrick's voice students formed the a cappella group Trills and Chills which performed at the A Cappella Fundraiser in April, presented by the Medway Highschool Microfinance Club.

INDEPENDENT FILM - Kendrick's song "Last Chance for Love" is featured in the short film Yellow Jacket, directed by Chris Nash and produced by Yoked Control, which won Best Drama and Best Actor in the regional Campus Moviefest Awards. The song, which is from Kendrick's musical Le Bistro Cafe, was perfomed by her band, Anne's Cordial.
